Taking Tradition to a Higher Level
Long regarded for it’s historical place in the annals of Sarasota golf history, Bent Tree Country Club is blending the old with the new as it embarks on a major club enovation project beginning April, 2008. After 31 years full of history and tradition that includes hosting thirteen consecutive LPGA Sarasota Classic professional tournaments (1976-1988), seven consecutive Florida State High School Championships (1980-1986), and multiple U.S. Open qualifiers, Bent Tree will undergo what some may consider an “Extreme Country Club Makeover.” The private country club has parlayed the development of club villas and/or town-homes around the clubhouse into what will amount to an approximately $8-million total facility renovation. Upgrades include a $2-million clubhouse renovation, a $3-million golf course renovation, new swimming pool complex, tennis courts, and health & fitness facility.
“This project gives our Club the opportunity to provide our members with a first-class country club experience; blend that with 31 years of history and tradition and we have a club of distinction, without a huge assessment or initiation,” says PGA professional Mark Bruce. “Over the past 20 years in Sarasota, developers and builders have spent countless millions of dollars trying to attract newcomers to the area, using the allure of the new golf course community lifestyle. People relocating to Florida from the midwest or northeastern parts of the country come from clubs that are often 60-100 years old. Those people want a golf club with a mature landscape, some traditional and historical background that makes them feel at home. Bent Tree is that type of Country Club.”

Golf course architect Steve Smyers, designer of highly regarded courses such as Isleworth CC in Orlando, Old Memorial in Tampa and the site of the 2003 US Open, Olympia Fields in Chicago, has been retained for the total course renovation.
