For beginners and those who are getting back into golf, this “Learn & Play” Golf School is for you! The school begins Tuesday, Feb. 9 for five sessions at Schiavetta Golf Academy at Evie's Golf Center off Bee Ridge Road in Sarasota.
   
Schiavetta covers putting, chipping, sand play and full swing fundamentals with irons and woods, as well and rules and etiquette. The students take their knowledge to the golf course for the last session.

A Club of Stategy and Skill: This 18-hole course offers both physical and psychological challenges for the serious and the casual player. Compared to most sports, golf is very safe. The chances of getting seriously injured are very small. But with all of the good news comes a few hazards golfers need to be aware of to stay safe and healthy.

Dehydration

During a four-hour round your body loses enough water to make you dehydrated, lose mental focus and feel tired, so it helps to drink a lot of water. A good rule of thumb is to drink eight ounces of fluid before you even tee off, then continue to drink four to eight ounces every 15 minutes of play. Sports drinks replace salt and electrolyte, and some soda can be beneficial, but keep in mind that drinking alcohol is dehydrating and should be done in moderation, or reserved for the 19th hole.

Golf and fitness. Two words you might not believe go together, judging from some of the physiques you see on the golf course. But working on strength, flexibility, and balance can not only make you feel better but also improve your scores.

A study recently completed by sports scientist Neil Wolkodoff, director of the Rose Center for Health and Sports Sciences in Denver revealed some interesting and very specific conclusions about the value of golf as exercise, and also about the effects of walking versus riding on the golfer’s score. Wolkodoff recruited eight amateurs, all men, ranging from ages 26 to 61 and handicaps ranging from 2 to 17.

The volunteers were fitted with various montoring and measuring equipment, and then each played the front nine of a hilly Denver golf course several times over the study period.
