Cathy EdelenThere are many changes at Sabal Trace Golf and Country Club in North Port. The course has already had and will undergo even more extensive renovations. Casino gaming machines are being installed, but the real headliner is head professional Cathy Edelen, who has returned to the club after a two-year absence.

“I’ve kept a villa on the golf course and always planned to come back,” she said.

Arguably the best female playing club pro in the area, Edelen returned to Sabal Oct. 1. She had been at Providence Golf Club in Orlando for two years. Prior to that, she was the head professional at Sabal for six years.

Originally from Kentucky, Edelen has qualified for the U.S. Women’s Open six times. This weekend, she is competing in the Southeastern Section LPGA team event on the east coast of Florida.

Sabal Trace offers a combination of gently rolling terrain, pine and palm trees, ponds, meandering canals, abundant native birds and wildlife, providing a natural and relaxing atmosphere. Four sets of tees will challenge the experienced golfer while providing a purely enjoyable experience for the novice.

Sabal TraceSabal Trace is a semi-private club with about 180 memberships. It hosts close to 50,000 rounds per year.

Currently, the October rates are about as low as you can go. The course has been overseeded in the past two weeks so the club is offering a $20 rate with cart in the a.m. and $10 with cart after 3 p.m.

Like many clubs, Sabal Trace is attempting to attract new players and members. It is offering gift cards to the club and retail outlets such as Wal Mart and Applebee’s through casino gaming machines.

Sabal Trace is located off US 41 and Sumter Blvd. (Exit 182 off of I-75) in North Port.
