Joey LamielleJoey  Lamielle  and Tommy Rymer of Sarasota have advanced to the second stage of the PGA Tour Qualifying School at the Grasslands Golf and Country Club in Lakeland. A Booker graduate, Lamielle tied for fourth at 15-under par. Rymer, a Florida State graduate, finished at 7-under.

Lamielle struggled on the Nationwide Tour this past summer, but he qualified for the U.S. Open in 2008. He reached the final stage of Q-School one other time but came up short.

Is Larry O’Brien the new hotshot of area amateurs? It seems that way. He has dominated the last two major events.

Last weekend, O’Brien, a former club pro who regained his amateur status, teamed with Ray Wenck to win the City of Sarasota Men’s Better Ball Championship by three strokes over the formidable team of Mark Leetzow and Steve Slocum on the British Course. O’Brien and and Wenck were 13-under par.

Last month, O’Brien breezed to victory in the City of Venice Men’s Championship at Lake Venice Golf Club. Here are the complete results from the Better Ball:

Quickie Tip

Many times when I measure a golfer’s ball position at address, I find it too far forward in their stance. This means when they swing, they are either going to make in-swing compensations with their hands (to compensate for the ball being in the wrong position) or they are going to "Fat City".

If you find yourself hitting inconsistent shots, with many of them being fat, it may not be because you are looking up to early. You may need to move the ball back in your stance a little. For distant wedge and pitch shots, the ball needs to be in the center of your stance.

-- Dave Pelz, Phil Mickelson's short game coach.
