South Florida PGA Pros Beat North Florida Pros for 8th Straight Year

PALM COAST, FL-– Club professionals from the South Florida PGA Section extended their unbeaten streak to eight years in the 27th annual Challenge Cup matches against their peers from the North Florida PGA Section.

The SFPGA won the last two singles matches to earn a 13-11 victory at The Conservatory at Hammock Beach. The NFPGA led by 4-2 after the four-ball stroke play matches on Day One but the SFPGA rallied to win the afternoon foursomes by the same 4-2 score for a 6-6 tie heading into the singles on Day Two.

With the singles matches tied at 5-5, and an 11-11 score overall, South Florida’s Chris Toulson beat Jim Garrison and Alan Morin defeated Tim Polce, both by 2 and 1 margins, in the 11th and 12th singles.

It was the 17th victory for the SFPGA, compared to eight by the NFPGA. There have been two halved matches. The NFPGA has not won since 1999.

Two NFPGA rookies, Corey Hamlin of DeBary and Matt Payne of DeLand, won all three matches. For the SFPGA, Peter Baxter of Fort Myers and Alan Morin of Lake Worth each had two wins and a halve, and senior A.J. Duncan of Naples had a win and two halves.

Each team was comprised of 12 players, including two seniors. The non-playing captains were Roger Kennedy of Stuart, a PGA Life Member who had played on 13 SFPGA teams, and Russ Libby, owner and general manager at Hidden Hills GC, Jacksonville, the immediate past president of the NFPGA.
