More than 600 invited guests arrived January 23, 2006 to celebrate the opening of The Concession Golf Course - a Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course, designed in association with Tony Jacklin. A walking tour of the new golf course and a day of food and fun were eclipsed only by the chance to see a golf exhibition by two of the games great players, Jack Nicklaus and Tony Jacklin. The two entertained the crowd with great golf shots and jokes, while they explained the design philosophy behind the course. Because they were playing for the fun of it, they good naturedly conceded many shots to each other along the way. The course was named to commemorate the 1969 Ryder Cup match. When the outcome of the U.S.A./U.K. match was hanging in the balance, Jack Nicklaus conceded a two-foot putt to then British Open Champion Tony Jacklin on the last green. It resulted in the first tie in the match's history. The pair left the green with their arms around each other's shoulders. This singular act of graciousness is roundly considered one of the grandest gestures of sportsmanship ever. Memberships are limited to 300 at the private, non-equity club. PGA Tour Player and ABC TV broadcaster Paul Azinger and actor Sir Sean Connery have both accepted honorary memberships. The Palladian style clubhouse at the $600 million, 1232-acre private gated estate golf course community is designed by Adrienne Vittadini and is set to open in 2007. The course utilizes 520 acres within the property and is 7,527 yards from the black tees. A slope rating of 155 ranks it as one of the toughest courses in the state of Florida. The Concession is located approximately seven miles east of I-75, off of SR 70. Call 941-951-6484 for real estate and membership information. |
