Callaway Club Fitting vanSarasota National Hosts Callaway Golf

Sarasota National in Venice is hosting a Callaway Club Fitting and Demo Day on Oct. 30.

The Callaway Club Fitting van is the same one the company uses during PGA Tour stops, so it is a great opportunity to get fitted correctly and to experience how sophisticated club fitting has become: swing speed, ball speed, launch angle, spin velocity and even the proper ball for your game.

Golfers are urged to visit Sarasota National on Oct. 30 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. or set up a time by calling 941-493-5192.

Last week paraplegic golfer Dennis Walters was at TPC at Prestancia, bringing a positive message to hundreds of area fifth-grade students. About 400 Sarasota County fifth graders were present to see Walters perform his world-renowned inspirational trick golf show.

Domenico Geminiani and Stephanie Mitchell captured the overall championships of the 2009 City of Sarasota Junior Championships last weekend. Geminiani shot 67-77 - 144, and Mitchell posted 82-77 - 159 at the Bobby Jones Golf Club.

Other division winners were Nelly Korda, 156; Tian Yi Cen, 151; Cole Johnson, 139; and Brad Knight 144. Only 51 juniors competed in the two-day tournament, including just six girls.

Mo Guttman of Sarasota, who qualified for the past two U.S. Senior Opens, finished tied for third in the recent Florida State Senior Open at the Naples Beach Hotel and Golf Club. Jerry Tucker, a teaching professional at Trump International in West Palm Beach who turned 60 in June, shot 68-67-65 - 200 at the Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club and won, finishing five strokes ahead of Chris Campbell, the second round leader. Campbell, the head professional at Vista Royale Golf Club in Vero Beach, posted 65-67-73 - 205.

2009 Charlotte County Open Champion Chris Trout

Chris Trout won the recent Smuggler’s Charlotte County Open by two strokes, but the story of the tournament was the play of J.J. Veloz, an Englewood teenager who challenged for the title. After shooting a 70 on the first day, Veloz soared to a 78 in the final round.

In other divisions, Charlotte boys golf coach Scott Harvey took the Men's A flight with a 145, while Nancy Smith charged back Sunday with a 72 to win the Ladies' A flight by four shots at 147. Other winners included Malcolm Oliver (Men's B), Reid Scott (Men's C), Chris Clark (Men's D) and Lindi Wunderlich (Women's B). Sebastian Mark got the low amateur score, finishing Sunday with a 70 for a 146.  Trout earned $2,500 for winning the tournament.
